Expensive Lesson ~ Sand Casting

That was a case of “a principle applies different definitions,” hence it was born even we didn’t have any expectations.

As I had a chance to take a closer look at this Aluminum match-plate pattern, I decided to turn this pricey spent into an expensive lesson I learned.

Here we go,

cope side of match-plate pattern
drag side of match-plate pattern

Above is match-plate pattern, it is split into 2 parts, cope side and drag side. These 2 sides are attached to a plate in opposite way and perfectly positioned to each other.

How does it work?  (again, from Wikipedia)

  1. Place a pattern in sand to create a mold.
  2. Incorporate the pattern and sand in a gating system.
  3. Remove the pattern.
  4. Fill the mold cavity with molten metal.
  5. Allow the metal to cool.
  6. Break away the sand mold and remove the casting.
